Is there an exit for this vicious cycle?

Modern media does more than influencing the society; it is also the society's mirror, it reflects its values and dreams. The media shows what the public wants to see and there is a positive feed back: some of the society aspects are more and more exacerbated in the real life. For instance, several car commercials shows that even the most unattractive man can have a beautiful woman with the right car, or diet/light food ads say you can only be attractive if you are thin. These two examples have become more frequent in our everyday life. The question left is: Is there an exit for this vicious cycle?
